Euell Gibbons apporves.
This feels wrong
You can cut it and every day or two harvest it again. Depends on the temperature and amount of rain for how fast it grows.
Dig it up and find a good spot. Good asparagus takes a long ass time to cultivate. When you plant a patch of it, it will take a few years before you get anything substantial out of it. My grandfather had a huge patch of it that he had going for decades. We always had way more than we knew what to do with.
Hell yeah! we have about 5 plants growing at my house and it grows so fast we get about 8-10 stalks a day for dinner all about 6-10 inches in length. Again, EVERY DAY
Mmmm my all time favorite vegetable. Little bit of garlic butter in a pan, grill em up…little long grain rice and a nice salmon fillet.
Could eat that shit every day. Shame asparagus is seasonal in Canada =(.
I grow it in Alaska and in ten years or so, no stalk has never once ever made it to the house to cook. It’s so different than store bought, which is dehydrated. It’s juicy amd the juice is almost a bit slimy. We eat it right there in the greenhouse, raw.( and I know cooking 2 min brings out even more of the flavor!) .
My wife used to grow a bush of it, that shit is insane.
Ok, there showoff.

It grows out of the fuxking ground!
Cool. My dad grew some but it didn’t do great. Do you have to leave some behind so the patch continues next season?
My father in law managed a landfill/waste recycling plant. He would go out in the ditches and pick it because it grew there in abundance. It was the best damn asparagus I ever had.
I worked in a grocery store produce department for years, and our nickname for asparagus was “grass.”
Love the taste and makes your pee smell really strange. (Yes, I’m aware I’m a weirdo, but it’s true)
If it grows so quick why the fuck is it always so expensive
The Ron Jeremy of vegetables
It takes about 3 years to mature to the point that you can pick the asparagus to eat, but it’s well worth it once mature. My gf has a row of asparagus she planted in 2020 and it’s all going gangbusters already this year.
fresh asparagus (we have a patch in my yard) is one of the best tasting things I can think of… it’s perennial and east as hell to grow, bunnies don’t eat it but the deer do, so you have to put a little fence around it with something sacrificial around the border… we just use hay.
I guess I am asparagus
Straight out of the ground you say?
Ours are planted in whiskey barrels.
One day there is nothing.
The next there are 3 inches of asparagus poking out!
They grow it in the fields where I live. When I’m waking the dog in the morning you can actually hear it creaking.
I just go collect it on walks here in Wisconsin.
Dang that’s more than what most redditors can muster
It’s part of the grass family.
So does most of the weeds in my yard and they both taste disgusting.
As opposed to growing straight down from the top into the ground?
Don’t most plants grow straight out of the ground?
I ate asparagus for the first time during a date in which I ended up being intimate with my date after. The next morning after urinating I took myself to urgent care to get tested for STD’s. This is how I learned asparagus makes your urine smell like death. Fun times.
It’s amazing. You cut the same stalks over and over.
It grows wild in ditches in Michigan. We used to stop on the way home for dinner.
Wait till you see what it does when you don’t cut it.
And my mom could somehow spot it growing out of a grassy ditchbank at 30mph.
