There’s been “bigger” moments but the first moment for me was grey fox saving you from metal gear on the ps1.
The first time you run out into Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time.
The prologue of Death Stranding is pretty awesome an made shiver. Such an epic moment when these black creatures are in sky…
Elder Scrolls oblivion when it was a brand new game when you escape the prison in the beginning of the game and are greeted by the incredible expanse before you (and blinded by the sunlight as you emerge from the passageway).
Nothing has blown me away as much as the falling skyscraper on Siege of Shanghai in Battlefield 4. Seeing an entire building come crumbling down in an online server with 64 players was truly breathtaking
Final fantasy X had amazing cinematics for it’s day, just over the top gorgeous.
Opening cut scene into gameplay of FFVII. Of its time of course and it helps that it was first game I played on PSOne in 1997 after a gap from gaming of about 5 years. Things had clearly moved on!!
Camera pans from Aerith out and above Midgar before dropping back down, picking up the train entering the station, down to the platform and Barrett and Cloud jump off the train and away you go straight into gameplay. Was just awesome at the time.
World of Warcraft Vanilla launch, the first time I discovered IronForge, the music, the forge…
Epic moment.
The opening sequence to FF7. Nothing has come close to the feeling of awe and disbelief I got when I first saw that wide aerial shot of Midgar for the first time.
Seeing the lightning in rdr2
Arriving at the amusement park in Nier Automata the first time.
The first time you cross the river into Mexico in red dead redemption 1 for me the sun was setting and the music played such a epic sight.
Less wow and more shock, but the moment you finally meet gwyn in dark souls. Everyone hyped him up as this unstoppable god among men, but when you reach him he’s nothing but a husk of his former self. He’s locked away in a burned up shrine, surrounded by the very soldiers he scorched when he linked the flame. And to top it off, the music isn’t upbeat or hype, it’s slow, melancholic even. It invokes a sense of sadness in the player with just a single piano key. You expect to have this big grandiose final duel, only to realize the legend has faded, and you are only there to finally end his misery.
The first time I traveled to Beagle Point in Elite Dangerous. It was existential and actually a little life changing.
A little info for those who have never played. Beagle Point is the furthest star from the center of the galaxy in Elite. The Galaxy is a 1 to 1 simulation of our own (or as accurate as they can get with what we know). When you get there, 65,000 light-years from our little blue marble, you can turn your ship around and see the entirety of our galaxy, and somewhere in that riot of light and color, floats our tiny orb. I think I sat there for nearly an hour just staring at the galaxy and thinking about that idea.
Halo Combat evolved, looking up and seeing the rest of the ring was mental for me as a child
The first zombie in RE:1, that creepy head turn looked real back then
The beginning of The Witcher 3 when you stand on the balcony. It was unreal how awesome the outlook was at the time. Or entering Toussaint in the Blood and Wine DLC.. The whole area is awesome.
Red Dead Redemption – Crossing the river and riding into Mexico. Such a breathtaking moment for me.
1998 leaving Midgar with cloud blew my mind. I thought I had finished the game. FF7 just was starting.
The Opera scene in Parasite Eve.
Grand Theft Auto 3 when you get past the intro and then you are free to explore the open world for the first time.
Not sure if it’s my favorite, but the moment the World Serpent moves when you call it in God of War, and you realize that those weren’t mountains is pretty mind blowing.
The first Half-Life, when you reach the surface for the first time. Genuinely felt like fresh air.
The opening of Bioshock infinite with the lighthouse. Ascension…ascension…hallelujah
BioShock 1. You know the one.
First Bioshock game. Went into the game not knowing anything about the plot and about fell outta my chair when you get into what looked like an elevator in a lighthouse and then the big reveal that you are traveling to an underwater city. The city and water and ocean creatures all made it such a beautiful scene.
