I’m being biased obviously since it’s my personal favorite game of all time but Shadow of the Colossus.
I think it’s a game that transcends itself from being a game, if that makes any sense lol.
Stanley parable- A simple chill game with a decent story that you should go with no spoilers
What Remains of Edith Finch, just an incredible story, really deep with an incredible ending.
Before Your Eyes. It’s kind of amazing how much it affected me. Maybe I’m weird though
The Mark of Kri
Ori and the Blind Forest. Good controls, gripping story, awesome music. It’s everything anyone could ask for from a Metroidvania.
Kan Gao’s “To The Moon”.
That Dragon, Cancer
Probably one of the saddest games I’ve ever played.
Outer Wilds. Just for sheer enjoyment of exploration you rarely get in real life or even other games.
Alternative option would be Half-Life Alyx as one of most unique gaming experiences you can get.
Journey
Gone Home. Such a beautifully written story with a bunch of layers.
Mother 2 (Earthbound)
oxenfree, ABZU
Ori and the will of the wisps. Amazing controls, fantastic story about what life can do to beings, music is top notch. One of the greatest metroidvania without other alike games difficulty makes it one of the few games where I hope there would be more after it ends.
The main character also does not speak during the whole game which makes me connect and basically associate myself completely as him. It makes every emotional scene that much better as it’s completely up to me to understand it. The only game that made my cry at the finish and even when thinking back to it.
Return of the obra dinn.
10/10 would like to forget about it so I can play it again.
One of my favorites, Machinarium.
Mario kart 64 while playing with 3 friends on the same tv
Conkers bad fur day. Why? Because you will never see another game like it. It’s a product of a time where no fucks were given, coated in a graphics style that has yet to emulated like ps1/2 graphics, produced by a company that Microsoft will more than likely never return to their former glory.
Subnautica the first hand experience is something else
Portal and its sequel
Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Firewatch is a great one. I’d say Life is Strange
Spec ops: The line
I’m gonna open this up to a list. You mentioned a great one with Firewatch, but some other games that left me emotionally drained are:
Brothers
SOMA
The Beginner’s Guide
Doki Doki Literature Club
Telltale’s TWD (both Seasons)
Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands
Spiritfarer
Spec Ops: The Line
What Remains of Edith Finch
EDIT: And just for pure fun, no emotional weight, but nothing but distilled fun and joy – Red Faction: Guerilla and the Mad Max game.
Any first person game made by Valve.
Outer Wilds
PS2 Ratchet and Clank. All four of them
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
