This is a whole series of this guy dismantling arguments from confederate sympathizers. It’s done in an entertaining way but actually includes deep knowledge of the history. Highly recommended.
The short answer is “ish”, the long answer is “ish, but not really”.
The more relevant point: why do you want to know?
I don’t mean YOU, I mean the people who tend to bring this stuff up. Often the point is to assert that the Conf. couldn’t have been THAT bad ‘cuz there were black confederates….riiiight?
Atun Shei films has been my favorite YouTuber for several years now. Nearly all of his content his great, entertaining and well researched. Who would have guessed a former historic tour guide and film school grad would great make YouTube videos.
There was a free black regiment in New Orleans. At first the Confederates thought this was cool. Then they thought it might look bad so they ditched them before they saw action
Of course not. Remember the scene in Django, where a group of idiot white boys handed him the gun? Or when Django gave the shot gun to the fellows in chains? That was the problem with arming slaves. I know that technically, there were “black confederates.” But c’mon, man. It is to larf!
The observation about slaves as soldiers challenges the very foundation of slavery. It’s a moment of almost realization, resembling self-awareness, making it perfect material for the ‘selfawarewolves’ category. This series skillfully dissects Confederate sympathizers’ arguments with historical depth and entertainment, making it highly recommended viewing
I had a professor of the civil war tell class…a couple magazines got letters to the editor about black confederates, he would write and counter each claim they made similar to this video…but eventually he just gave up. Lost cause runs deep
5:27 The 1st Louisiana Native Guard answers the question, don’t think it matters that it’s an exception since you’re dealing in exceptions to begin with.
I think this question just goes nowhere, so what if there were? It’s not like there was internet or even accessible media for most back then so if you got clothes and food it probably seemed like a good deal to some. Doesn’t really change anything in the big picture regards slavery.
I’ll save you 25 minutes. Yes.

The same question as:
Were there Jews in the Nazi party?
Are there LGBTQ members in the GQP?
Are there minorities in the GQP?
These people tend to think they are the exception.

Many later fought for the Union.
There were Black confederates, just like there are Black and Hispanic Republicans today.
I wish this YouTuber wasn’t so annoying because I agree with everything he says
Hey now don’t talk shit about chicory in coffee.
Thanks. This is fantastic.
Gotta check this guy out
The thumbnail made me think it was Mike and Jay from RLM, and thought “that’s bold”
There still are…Tim Scott
Thumbnail made it look like Tom Weston-Jones who plays Richard Lee in Warrior is in this video lmao.
I feel like this would be less surprising if we all remembered that slavery was not the only issue driving the civil war
This guy was my guide on a ghost tour in New Orleans a few years ago. He ruled.
I like that the chess set itself contradicts the “northern aggression” myth, given that in chess white makes the first move

It’s crazy how powerful the Lost Cause propaganda was that we are still dealing with the effects of it over 150 years later
Every single ‘Checkmate, Lincolnites’ video is incredible and you should binge them.
Did you watch the video? He explains it pretty well.
A good book on this topic by Kevin Levin – [https://uncpress.org/book/9781469653266/searching-for-black-confederates/](https://uncpress.org/book/9781469653266/searching-for-black-confederates/)
Worth a read for anyone interested in this specific topic or the Lost Cause narrative in general.

I got into this guy for about a week then forgot about him. Happy to see him again. I’m gonna make sure to sub
I mean of course there were. There were black slave owners and traders.
