I had a Wii in primary school and tehre was this one kid that would come by every day to play Mario Kart, Wii Sports and Pokémon Battle Revolution with me. We weren’t friends, not even close. He bullied me in school but when we were gaming we were kind to one another. The power of split screen gaming is fun!

Indeed, the only game I even have with split screen gaming is that furturistic Ghost Recon on the PS3

I have so much fun defending the HQ with my bros, no BS WiFi hiccups, not affected by M1 (Singapore WIfi provider) accidental shutdowns, just plain old fun

Nintendo still does it tho.. Their latest game, Nintendo switch sports has it for example even tho it surprisingly has good online

Sure most of their other games doesn’t have good online but I’d like to believe that they are still doing split screen because they know it’s fun for everyone

„It takes two“. Perfect with your girlfriend or wife. Beginner-friendly. Amazing game. That‘s how split screen should be. They even plan to make a movie with the Sonic-Producers.

Until we got another Xbox this Christmas, my gf and I would still play the MW19’ Call of Duty in split screen and we actually were extremely good. It has issues but was still so much fun.

We all played different genres of games.. platformers, RPGs, puzzle games, racing games, etc. Then we’d occasionally get together and play the 4-player games and it was fun to just battle your buddies. Getting good wasn’t the focus.

The lack of split screen games in an era where current gen can easily run them is infuriating. But companies want you to buy two copies of their game instead of just optimizing it to support split screen.

I got news for ya: I’m not buying another copy of your game.

There’s still couch co-op stuff out there but it’s not as common definitely. My favorite growing up was playing Secret of Mana with my brother and my best friend, had to buy a massive multitap adapter for my snes for player 3! Can’t think of too many other games from that era that had seamless drop-in co-op like that, especially an RPG. Honorable mention to Toejam & Earl and that unfortunate entry on the 64 I missed and have heard I’m all the better for it.

I mean yeah, but not really. You can say that about some new coop titles but there are exceptions. For example they introduced split screen coop in Stardew Valley like a year or 2 ago, I didn’t use it much but when I’ll get my brother to play with me again I’ll definitely use it.

When I first started working in gamedev, I’d bring this up on the regular just to see the angry rant our UI programmer would go on every time. Apparently it’s lots of work for the UI team and only a small percentage of people ever use it.

I was certainly in that percentage until xbone/ps4 generation when it basically disappeared so my wife and I needed separate consoles in order to play together. Laaame.

There’s still games like rounds, but that’s not split screen due to the map size, so I’m not sure that counts

I probably came close to losing friends because of multiplayer betrayals, chasing them around and kissing them in GTA: San Andreas, or playing as Tingle and yelling, “Hey!” as they jump in Windwaker.

  • Whatevsperson

Me and my bro play gears and I’m still amazed they allow spilt screen, and It Take Two, which was the game of the year in 2021

I remember playing 4 player on a tiny CRT and no one thought anything of it. What a time to be alive.

  • eatschnitzeleveryday

I feel blessed finally getting some friends together to play Mario Kart and Quake on the Switch last weekend. Keeping split screen traditions alive one inebriated, irregular game night at a time.

    > Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look at the other players‘ screen once in a while, you could miss it.

  • Bipperinsomnia

Personally I miss grabbing 3 other peeps and playing zombies on black ops. Now you’re limited to 2 player coop.

  • ltgenspartan

Some of my best memories in gaming are playing the original Star Wars Battlefront on split screen with my dad when I was younger

  • WhiteCheddr

Then why can’t I find more fun multiplayer co-op games that doesn’t have only local co-op. Split screen is definitely not dead

  • LordDooves

Huh? I would argue that between Steam and Nintendo switch, there’s probably more shared screen couch games than ever before… There’s about 2 dozen I currently cycle through, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of steams offerings.
