The beginning of that movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I can’t think of another movie that has had that effect. Either because I was so young, or nobody else has done it as well.

I’m the same age and had the same thoughts. Cold War danger seemed so real. I spent a significant amount of time doing my paper route fantasizing about what I would do when (not if) the Russians invaded.

Are you kidding me Op?! 84!!! This was way real at the time lol . I remembered when I saw this and learned about ICBM’s around the same time…. Nothing like the 80’s childhood fear of nuclear winter! Lol

This is definitely on my list of all time best movies, I really love it, I hope they give it another remake because the remake they did previously was not very good, It would seem more fitting than ever to keep it as the Russians and the remake was the North Koreans of all countries? If you aren’t going to do Russia then make it China as that is probably the only country that would have a shot at getting anywhere with an invasion of the USA

It’s cultural impact was such that Ukrainian partisans and TDF volunteers are spray painting ‘Wolverines!’ all over the show.

I had this English teacher for a couple years in middle school (early 90’s) whose name was Mr. Joe. Mr. Joe didn’t have a classroom of his own because he liked to drink and the principal and him went way back so he didn’t lose his job, he just lost his classroom so that he couldn’t hide liquor in his desk. Mr. Joe was a pretty decent teacher, and didn’t ride us too hard on work considering one day of the week was spent watching a movie – it was never the same day and was always exciting to see him walking around school before your class with the cart with the TV attached because you knew it was movie day. I think he just didn’t like to teach that much and thought 4 days a week was enough, but he’d ask us questions after the movie to make sure we weren’t sleeping at least.

Anyway, Mr. Joe loved this movie and we probably watched it twice per month.

In retrospect there was a lot of silliness in Red Dawn, but I really respect the way it *absolutely refused* to make war look like a glamourous, exciting adventure. By the end of the film, five of the seven kids in that pic were dead, their guerrilla cell essentially wiped out, and the Soviet occupation continued unabated. (Barring captions that basically said “America won eventually.”)
