Canadian-born Norma Shearer was active in film 1919-42. She was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar six times, and won only this time. She was actually nominated three years in a row (1929, 1930, 1931). She reportedly turned down roles in other Oscar-winning films, such as “Gone With The Wind,” and “Sunset Boulevard.”

After marrying studio head Irving Thalberg, (from 1927-36, his death), Shearer was expected to retire, but remained in acting.
