Be honest, even if you were doing a positive karma run on your first play through, you still made a separate save just to blow up those nuclear bomb worshipping hippies.
No regrets until you realise it takes twice as many loading screens to get into your house…
I did the same thing my first time through as well. Then I went back to the town. I did not expect to find “survivors.” Really took the game to a whole other level for me.
Still one of the coolest and most unforgettable moments in gaming.

Fun fact. On console commands on pc if you use the tcl command and walk up to the guy on the sky bridge at the entrance to megaton he asks how did you get up here

I need to go back and play this game again. Out of all my handful of previous play throughs I have yet to choose this option.

I was surprised to find out you can still do this after you give tenpenny tower to the ghouls.
To make things even after destroying all of megaton I kill Allistair Tenpenny. Then I can feel ok about it.
