A member of the Vintage Los Angeles group on Facebook posted this photo that her mother had taken of Nichelle, with this explanation:

“So heartbreaking to hear this today. Nichelle was such a lovely lady. A little story for you…..my Mother was a photographer in Hollywood many years ago and she created a portfolio for Nichelle back in the 60’s. Nichelle especially loved this portrait. She told Mom that she just did a TV pilot and it was science fiction. She joked and said she didn’t think it would make it but it was fun to do. She called Mom later to tell us when it was to air and we were so excited for her. Yes, it was Star Trek. Years later I saw her at her book signing in Atlanta and she told me that was still her favorite photo and she was so upset as it was destroyed in the earthquake. I called my Mom and she had kept a large copy, the same size, and mailed it to Nichelle. She was a beautiful and talented woman in so many ways. She left us all with years of memories and inspiring us in so many ways…”

Quick story .. I was visiting a old friend from college in mid 2000’s (2006??) in west LA.. just outside that Century City area. Anyway.. it was a grab and go brunch style place. But they had places to sit . And I see Nichelle Nichols get up and stop at the head of house area. I didn’t know what to say.. so I blurted out, “you’re so beautiful..”. She took a quick look at me and said , “oh not as beautiful as you all”.. she said “you all”. Never forget it for as long as I live . Like she was acknowledging all of us (?). Sorry, not a great story . But a story I love , nonetheless.
