Commercial director here. Trust me. We wish we could make them entertaining. We fight tooth and nail. Well, most of us. But blame ad agencies’ lack of effective account personnel (agencies are a stepping-stone for account people to move client-side), ad execs and boards of directors who are terrified of losing clients by taking risks and therefor damaging stock prices, and risk-adverse clients who lack a creative cell in their bodies and wouldn’t know the value of entertainment if Steven Spielberg slapped them in the face with a dildo on PPV and gave them the money. Thank god for small companies that have no choice but to take risks and for the few agency execs willing to fight for good creative. Few and far between.
