McKinsey: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

  • It’s such a comically evil company that if you proposed making a company like that the antagonist of a TV show, to use a topical comparison of sorts, you’d get laughed out of the writing room

  • I hope one day John will do a very deep dive on the big 4 as well (even better if he talks about Arthur Andersen as well).

I think this piece is fantastic even though very few people may be able to relate to consultancy businesses in general

  • It is weird to learn about a company for the first time and realise they had a hand in some of the worst things you’ve been hearing for years.

“Capable of anything, culpable of nothing.” fucking horrible.

  • OH. So THESE Are the assholes we have to blame for the fuckheads exploiting income inequality!

**E** oh FUCK these guys are somehow even worse than that. I didn’t think it was possible but ho. lee. fuck.

  • McKinsey and their alumni are pure trash. The expertise is in manipulating executives and stripping value. Oh look at their investment firm MIO too. Surely no conflicts.

  • When you look at why there are so many issues nowadays with seemingly everything being too expensive and worse value for money, just look at how many senior executives in companies are alumni of McKinsey. Its actually terrifying.

  • Wow. This was one of the best John Oliver episodes ever. And his anger at the arrogance of McKinsey really shines through – plus it was hilarious.

McKinsey only exists to serve the top 0.1% and the governments (the government is to primarily ensure that they save their own asses). They don’t give a flying fuck about the planet, job losses, societal erosion.

I honestly thought that mass restructuring and layoffs was the worst of McKinsey till I started to read about the whole Purdue pHarma story. It’s unbelievable that they have gotten away with so much shit just by maintaining a supreme aura of secrecy.

However, they do one thing very well – every year they go to the best schools across the world and create an absolute aura that makes every insecure overachiever deeply covet joining McKinsey about everything else (and this keeps on carrying on every year). Hope McK will be a less cool to go and work in the future

  • A friend of mine worked with the firm, consulting oil. Pretty wild company I must say. He’s got his private driver with G-Wagen, team building retreats in castles, regattas, 46 hours work days, etc… he was rehabilitating for two years after quitting the firm.

  • I’ve engaged and/or approved spending for McKinsey projects many times over my career. They aren’t immoral or explicitly evil, but they are often useless and amoral.

They are often hired to justify ideas that the C-Suite wants but needs to sell to the Board of Directors. As the video notes, McKinsey is used a convenient scapegoat for layoffs that someone else wanted.

They are also willing to work with anyone – regardless of morality as long as they pay. They are basically the same as other professional services firms (lawyers, bankers, accountants). The big difference is that lawyers and banks usually won’t pretend that they care about who their clients are. Management consultants just act like they are more righteous when they aren’t.

With respect to usefulness, I will say their broader industry studies are often helpful if bloated. Lots of fluff that sounds right, but you have to dig for substance. Their work on specific companies or specific initiatives is less useful.

  • Every time Last Week Tonight does a topic that I know nothing about, I know I’m in for something pretty awful or heinous. Looks like this episode was no exception.

  • My sister works for this company as a partner. She is the most psychopathic person I’ve ever met, comically so. I knew as soon as she started doing well there it was a red flag because anyone that would continence her obviously odious behavior and worldview must be evil.

  • You know, I’m not a huge fan of his delivery (the shouting British guy thing is grating to me) but fuck his pieces are well researched, well written, and cut through the both-sides bullshit like I’ve never seen.

  • The best part is that I’ve seen similarities that people who have majored in business. They’re unable to explain what they do specifically. Explain their roles as doing everything. They show off and boast their company.

  • That could be a multi-parter split between scandals and the business as usual work.

Oliver spent a lot of time on the scandals and that’s understandable. But, they’re day-to-day work deserves a lot more attention. The argument that there’s only 3 great organizations left is perfect for McKinsey. Because they helped destroy the rest of them.

  • My last company turned an IT problem into a complete bankruptcy going from one consulting firm to the next. The root problem was our owner but Jesus did the consultants speed up the inevitable.
