Maria Callas and Marilyn Monroe at JFK’s birthday gala, 1962. Marilyn spent $12000 on her now iconic birthday dress, and requested “a truly historical dress, a dazzling dress that’s one of a kind. A dress that only Marilyn Monroe could wear.”.

She got some cones
Fun fact: the happy birthday song was a planned and approved performance, with Marilyn playing the breathy bombshell character that she’d made famous but had largely given up by that time.
>”My Mother (Monroe’s acting coach) was a wreck when she got home from the rehearsal “It keeps getting sexier and sexier. If she doesn’t stop, it will be a parody.“ Richard Adler was crazed (Richard had written the special lyrics for the song), he made Peter Lawford call the president, who just laughed and said, ‘Great.’
>
>“What did you say?” I asked. “Mom, why didn’t you tell her the truth?” She looked chastised. “She didn’t want to hear it. She’s determined to do it sexy,” she told us. “‘How else can I top everybody else?’”
>
>That evening I went to Madison Square Garden with my date. Mom and Delos were with Marilyn and Arthur Miller’s father, who she adored. I watched from a nearby seat.
>
>She gave them what they wanted, she stole the show, and the attention was a shot in the arm, as intoxicating as a drug, but I hurt for her. From what she’d told me, each time she caricatured herself, she chipped a piece out of her own dream.”

Edit: here’s her sub if anyone’s interested r/MarilynMonroe
I read she needed to be sewn into the dress
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s worst nightmare.
You can feel the tension in that photo.
All the dudes in that party were in trouble when they got home.
I saw that dress on display a few years back. Stunning.
I love seeing pics of Monroe with other women in the pic because I don’t think I’ve ever seen one where the other woman wants to be in the same zip code as Marilyn. Slays me every time!
Happy birthday Mr. President!
That’s over $106,000 today, adjusted for inflation.
Dude in the middle is trying his hardest to keep looking up
I would love to see this in color. The Callas dress especially.
I never realized how modern of a silhouette this dress was, or that so many Kardashian/Beyoncé/Rihanna looks since were basically based on it
Poor Jackie – here are two mistresses for two of her husbands.
Maria Callas was with Onassis before he left her to marry Jackie but they carried on their affair
I’m thinking “Mars Attacks”.
Is that Maynard James Keenan in the middle?
Walp, it worked. Unforgettable.
But Maria Callas is a truly formidable runner-up.
The naked dress years before today’s actresses thought of it.
She was beautiful.
Natural figure wise, I don’t anyone else has topped her yet.
Weird coincidence on this photo! While Monroe was rumored to be having an affair with JFK, Callas was having an affair with oil-magnate Aristotle Onassis. Onassis would later on marry JFK’s widow Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
Jean Louis the man who designed the dress confirmed she was not wearing a bra. They had to literally sew her into the dress.
They’re both beautiful 🤤❤️
Ah that Italian look of superiority.
She was very fit. Jogged and weight lifted before that was a thing for women
