    The only thing I don’t love about this sketch is I feel like they might be implying that Gremlins 2 isn’t absolutely amazing, and I disagree. So fun. Even revisiting it, it seems way ahead of its time.

    I never got this sketch, because the whole purpose of the movie was to make it as insane as possible. The director knew exactly what he was doing.

    Gremlins 2 is so insane because the Director Joe Dante didn’t want to make it at all and purposely made what he called an ‘anti-sequel’. A movie so ridiculously off the wall and so uncaring about the source material that they would never ask him again.

    The studio first asked Joe Dante to return after the success of the first Gremlins and he refused. So they went around to various people trying to develop a sequel and couldn’t get anything off the ground. They finally went back to Joe Dante who agreed to return as long as they gave him three times the budget of the original and full creative control.

    All the crazy stuff in Gremlins 2 is to purposely make the movie bad, but it ends up making the movie good for the wrong reasons.

    It’s one of the most unconventional big budget movies of its time. There still hasn’t been another Gremlins movie to this day.

    I wish we could take this one step further, get all the writers/directors/producers of this film in a room like this and show them this skit, with close-ups of all their shame.

    I once put on Gremlins 1 for my nephews who were around age 6-8 thinking ‘i remember watching this as a kid’. Holy shit, i forgot the first one is definitely NOT a kids film. But it seemed like they wanted to make sure the 2nd one was.

    What the fuck at this thread! I had just finished watching Gremlins and Gremlins 2 with a sheltered 22yo friend to show them how insane the contrast between the two movies were, let alone the fucked-up Santa story in the first one.

    I’m of the view that **Gremlins 2** should be considered as part of a triptych of batshit mental sequels with the other two films being **Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey** and **Addams Family Values**. They are three films that together make for a fucking awesome movie night.

    Sometimes I wonder:

    1.- How the managed to produce this insane amount of instant classic comedy for years.

    2.- If they sometimes these days come up with an idea that would be great for a sketch. Do they write it? Or maybe just think, what a shame… and go on with their day.
