Eck was from Baltimore MD. I think he lived there in the same neighborhood where he grew up until the crime got completely out of hand. He was in the 1932 cult movie Freaks.

Real story, a magician would use these brothers in what is perhaps the most realistic sawing a man in half routine ever performed. They’d call up the “full” brother, swap with Johnny in the box, and while he ran around on his hands a dwarf would run around with a pair of pants pulled up over his head.
The hospital was doing a “have one kid, get the other half off” special the day they were born.
It’s actually a pretty sad story. John really betrayed his trust and so he never stood by him again.

Toward end of his career Johnny bought one of those 1/4 sized amusement park trains to take on tour with them. He loved driving the train because no one could see that he was special.
