Did you get your kicks?
Welcome to Santa Monica, the original Hot Dog on a Stick stand is just down on the strand… go there.
I only learned 1 week ago that Chicago has one end of route 66. I always thought it was much further south.
so nice photo
But the real adventure is in-between along the way.
Its neat to see the place across the street from where I used to eat Panda every Wednesday for two decades before the pandemic.
I live a few blocks from that first picture but I never knew that was the very beginning of Route 66 (I knew it was in Chicago but did not know it was there).
A few years ago I ran the Lemons Rally over the length of Route 66 with my brother in my 1940 LaSalle hearse. It was quite an adventure. The car preferred the old road to the modern freeway next to it, so we took the original pavement whenever possible. And we saw more dead small town gas stations than I thought could exist.
I spent two weeks on that road trip years ago. It was a fantastic time.
Which cities are these?
Dappy Hake Cay!!!! (Has anyone noticed a large number of cake days over the last few weeks? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many in a row it’s like every day I’m running into the sweet slices)
One of the best two weeks of my life. I’m sure you had a lot of fun along the way. Can’t wait to do it again.
I’d love a story-oriented videogame from the hay day of route 66. you’d meet interesting characters along the way with period correct motels, diners, gas stations, drive-in restaurants, landmarks, minor celebrities, and get into misadventures maybe with early biker gangs, LE, maybe the car would break down next to sketchy farm etc. a road trip seems like the perfect excuse for a linear plot with disconnected encounters and not much backstory or character development.. well I guess you could say 66 would be the main character.
I took a picture at rt 1 in key west years ago. When I was in Acadia in Maine wanted to find the end/beginning but it was another 5 hrs to a little town.
I am hoping to do this.
How long did this take you and what did you do to prepare?
Now do route 20. Boston to Oregon.
Slightly disappointed it doesn’t say End in Santa Monica.
bucket list is to do the entire Route 1 drive…similar situation.
Very disappointed
in the Chicago end. That’s it. That little sign. Santa Monica has a wall painted celebrating.
