“Jeanne and Susan Age: 61 Jeanne (left) is the twin who commented that her sister looks “ten years older” — in fact, the researchers upped that to an 11-and-a-quarter-year edge. The reasons for Susan’s condition are that she smoked for 16 years of her life, sunbathes, and weighs 15 pounds less. Since her 20s, Susan (right) has spent as much time as she could in the sun (she has plenty of opportunity on Florida’s east coast, where she moved more than a decade ago). Jeanne, meanwhile, has aimed for “as little exposure as possible.” Besides causing Susan’s dark, patchy discoloration and age spots, UV light also reduces skin’s elasticity, increasing wrinkles and deepening creases, Guyuron says.”
Crazy the long term effects of smoking. Finally quit after 20 years of smoking myself. Shit stole my father from me as well. All these damn cancers out there, y’all take care
These brain dead comments got me laughing so hard. She looks like shit and everyone thinks she looks happier. That’s just a coping mechanism for your shitty habits
I will always remember accompanying my dad to his work as a kid, and beeing shocked that he was the youngest in the office. Turn out he wasn’t , he was the second oldest worker there, but the only one who didn’t smoke. This scared me for life and I never even tried to smoke since then.
I’m also half of a twin, not identical though. I can’t stand the heat because it drains my energy so I’ve always avoided direct sunlight as much as possible. I’m 47 and between that and a healthy life style people still think I’m 35-37. My brother on the other hand is a sun lover and he smokes and drinks and looks like an old leather glove.
There was a woman that was maybe in her mid 30s to early 40s that would frequent the store I worked at. This woman was white but she tanned so much she looked very not white. She looked ROUGH. I mean her skin looked like a dried leather. I just don’t see how someone chooses to do that to themselves. I’m glad they started putting restriction on tanning years ago.
reminds me of the old man driver whose face had similar aftershock from the sun. One side was looking way older due to him driving the same route every day with the sunlight on that side
A lot more people smoked in the 80s, and back then it was legal to smoke in restaurants, so even people that didn’t smoke were constantly inhaling second-hand smoke and having it constantly on their skin and clothes. Furthermore, it was believed that sunlight was healthy, and that being pale was inherently unhealthy and that being tanned provided a “healthy glow” so most people went out of their way to get sun regularly, which further aged their skin.
People, on average, *looked* a lot older relative to their age back then than they do now. I’m 42, and thanks to not smoking and wearing sunscreen anytime I have to go out in the sun, I look younger than everyone in that photo except the 33 year old, who is the only one in that photo that would pass for 33 by today’s standards. The 58 year old looks old enough to be my grandfather despite only being 16 years older than me today.
Smoking is terrible for you for 1000s of other reasons but 95% of the facial difference here is sun damage. The only thing smoking does to people’s faces that doesn’t reverse when they quit is those fine lines around mouths in women.
I smoked, dipped, chewed, and vaped from 18-24.
I am now 67 days free of nicotine entirely. Quit everything cold turkey slowly, and finally vaping.
I can hold my breath way longer now lol
My favorite example is the older truck driver, the side of his face that faced the window and got sun on it was sagging and looked 15 years older than the other side.

The one on the right looks happier
Josh Brolin preparing for a new role.
Most of that is caused by the sun and you can tell.
As for smoking 16 years, the real question is how much? There’s a massive difference between smoking a pack a day and smoking one or two a week.
Show their teeth and listen their voices, that’s where most the damage is.

edit: Just FYI, I’m not trying to defend smoking. I’ve just seen a lot of crispy people, that’s all.
Yeah my mom is an identical twin and her sister smoked and the difference is striking.
These brain dead comments got me laughing so hard. She looks like shit and everyone thinks she looks happier. That’s just a coping mechanism for your shitty habits
I don’t go outside so I’m golden
I will always remember accompanying my dad to his work as a kid, and beeing shocked that he was the youngest in the office. Turn out he wasn’t , he was the second oldest worker there, but the only one who didn’t smoke. This scared me for life and I never even tried to smoke since then.
Look up Mario Andretti and his identical twin Aldo. Quite the difference!
Sunscreen is important
Heavy smoking and excessive sun turns skin into leather.
I used to work with a woman that was a chronic tanner/sunbather. I thought she was in her 50s but it turned out she was 35.

I dont understand sunbathing. Why dont people bathe like normal people using water
I think they both look fine.
reminds me of the old man driver whose face had similar aftershock from the sun. One side was looking way older due to him driving the same route every day with the sunlight on that side
Take a look at [this photo](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2LJzPTUUAAz5rG.png) of the cast of Cheers in 1982.

The truck driver photo convinced me to wear my sunscreen religiously.
I now feel better after having been in the sun for a while, who knew your skin didn’t have to feel fire-roasted after a day out?
That’s called “The Florida Effect”
Wear SUNSCREEN ppl💅
The coping smokers in this thread are actually hilarious
Smoking is terrible for you for 1000s of other reasons but 95% of the facial difference here is sun damage. The only thing smoking does to people’s faces that doesn’t reverse when they quit is those fine lines around mouths in women.
It’s REAL easy to tell them apart now
I smoked, dipped, chewed, and vaped from 18-24.
I am now 67 days free of nicotine entirely. Quit everything cold turkey slowly, and finally vaping.
I can hold my breath way longer now lol
*THE SUN IS A DEADLY LASER*
There is the famous case of the women who was a truck driver with sun damage to only the left side of her face. [https://supposeudrive.com/wp-content/uploads/truck-driver-face-suppose-u-drive-sun-damage-to-skin.jpg](https://supposeudrive.com/wp-content/uploads/truck-driver-face-suppose-u-drive-sun-damage-to-skin.jpg)
The one on the left owns a hairbrush too
I’ve seen those sunbathers after they get old, I’d rather have a pale butt.
The sun is the leading cause of skin aging.
That’s my secret for looking young – never leave the house.
If I quit smoking will the damage already done regenerate? I am 25 years old.
My favorite example is the older truck driver, the side of his face that faced the window and got sun on it was sagging and looked 15 years older than the other side.
[this I guess I remember the picture not reading an article on it](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trucker-accumulates-skin-damage-on-left-side-of-his-face-after-28-years-on-the-road/)
This is why I’ll never try to sun tan.
nothing surprising, people who spend a lot of time in the sun look way older than they should
