Thereās a kid in my neighborhood that looks to be about high school age.
Everytime I drive by he starts pumping his fists at me and usually does some elaborate celebration like running and doing a backflip and letting out an exultant yell like he just won some major sports victory. He seems like his happy meter is ābrokenā on 11. Heās always like excitedly dancing around and listening to music.
If Iām being honest itās such an odd thing that I suspect thereās a mental component involved, but whatever the reason for it, the dude seems perpetually in a state of complete bliss. I find it impossible to not like the kid though Iāve never actually met him, even when Iām having a bad day seeing his joy always lifts me up a bit.
I worked at Sega during the dreamcast era and I had never seen such highs and lows at a company before. Towards the end it was really depressing. Iām glad Sega is still around and finding a new audience now.
I still have mine. Spent that entire school summer break playing Sonic adventure, but damn the cases for the games were so easy to break. Most of my games are in a cd binder. Also Blue Stinger remake please.
Man this console was so cool and ahead of its time. But Sega had already burned so much good will with the segacd and Saturn it just couldn’t recover. I will always love it.
Phantasy Star Online was my first online console game, changed my life.
The first time I literally stayed up for days playing because the idea of being able to play with others from across the globe was wild AF.
It was a pretty good system for it’s time, even if some of the games were a little obscure,i keep mine in it’s original box up my loft (attic) along with all my other old consoles, unpacking the Dreamcast doesn’t make me as happy as this guy but i still wouldn’t sell it for anything,it only makes a rare appearance for nostalgic purposes these days
Fuck man, this was my favorite console of all time. Sega GT was my favorite, building weird ass cars and trying to beat online records, man… And the UFC game and Sonic, I never thought in a million years at the time that e Dreamcast would be the last system Sega ever made. So sad, so much nostalgia.
Man the Dreamcast was the shit! So many good games that were way ahead of their time. So many games that were just wacky and novel. So many games that broke new ground. It brought so many arcade games to the home console without sacrificing their quality and it was also one of the first consoles to be online. Man I just loved the Dreamcast.
Sonic Adventure
Soul Calibur
Power Stone (1 & 2)
2K Sports (series)
Marvel vs Capcom (1 & 2)
Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Shenmue (yes its janky by today’s standards but man was it mind blowing back then)
Jet Grind Radio!
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
Phantasy Star Online
Crazy Taxi
Seaman
San Francisco Rush 2049
In the time period these came out (1999 – 2001) they were absolutely mind blowing!
I was in Japan for the launch of Final Fantasy 13 and streamed myself going from home to a biiig electronic store like this.
Something about it is way different than waiting at Gamestop for that year’s COD.
People were openly nerding out over their favorite FF, and of course it spread to other nerdy topics. Every walk of Japanese life was there too, so not just what you’d call a traditional nerd there. People grew up loving the series there, and the marketing is insane in the Tokyo area, so the lines everywhere were filled with fans.
I remember when The Last Story released, Hironobu Sakaguchi went to Akihabara to sign people’s copies of the game. Just randomly. Father of FF with his new game at a game launch.
I’ll miss that shit, and this pic brought back a good memory.
When consoles were really consoles.
Ah the beginning of the piracy journey for a lot of people.. I miss that console
I always wanted one. I should start looking now that I’m older and going by the kids I’m rich š
Man is about to slam some soul calibur
Dynamite cop and zombie revenge were so good!
If we all got new Dreamcasts, we would be
It’s not about the Dreamcast, this guy is living in 1998.
What a lucky bastard.
I remember 9/9/99
Can Sega make a Dreamcast Mini already??
I get this feeling every time I power mine on and see that swirl appear.
I like how the staff are wearing aprons, like those Dreamcastās are fresh out of the oven.
playing Soul Calibur 2 at home with (what was basically) the exact graphical detail as the arcade was amazing. i wish sega had faired better
The face I made playing Sonic Adventure before school every morning
The Dreamcast was such a cool console.
Dreamcast. All time favorite console
One of the best consoles ever made imo
I just read that only 9 million Dreamcast’s were sold worldwide. I was part of the 0.15% of the population who bought one.
Dreamcast was ahead of its time. I had one in the military. Felt like I was playing arcade games at home. So smooth and responsive
Sonic adventure and crazy taxi were peak gaming
I peaked in life in 1997 when I got N64 for Christmas. Been chasing that high ever since to no avail.

Bet the Taxi Ride home was Crazy!

Edit was thinking of 32x.
Iāve said it before and Iāll say it again: the North American Dreamcast launch day lineup is the GOAT. A few selections:
SoulCalibur
PowerStone
Sonic Adventure
Hydro Thunder
House of the Dead 2
NFL Blitz 2000
Ready 2 Rumble

Would love to see sega releasing a new console
Powerstone was š„
I miss these days. Gaming was fun. Now it feels so disconnected and cold to me. Which in the age of online gaming is so damn sad. Sigh.
Best console (relative to its time) ever.
9/9/99. I was there. Dreamcast remains one of my favorites.

HYDROOO THUNDER!!!!!!!
I have one sitting in my gameroom right now. Powerstone was one of the best games ever made. Fight me.
I feel like this is an era and level of excitement that may never be seen again.
I’ll die on the hill that the dreamcast was way superior than any other console at the time. I wish sega hadn’t died on that hill too.
