Hyper Light Drifter remains to this day one of the greatest pixel art games ever made. A hallmark in art design and atmosphere.

Dont forget the music
its beautiful and atmospheric with an excellent sense of style, but the gameplay is just sort somewhere in the middle and the game-world is a little needlessly convoluted to navigate considering its actually fairly linear
i did beat it, and i enjoyed most of it but i cant see myself ever revisiting it.
Sea of Stars is looking pretty great
Agreed
It’s really not even that old. If we’re saying still, to this day, then let’s talk about how well Cave Story holds up, being a one man project released in 2004.
HLD is a game I’ve had installed on my PC for probably 3 years and never opened it.
Children of Morta is pretty good tho.
You must have not played enter the gungeon or hotline miami or katana zero
Love the visuals but I always feel lost in the game
That it was made in GameMaker really shows how important gamplay is over graphics or game engine.
An even older game having a crazy soundtrack, art and atmosphere:
Chrono Trigger.
I think it’s also interesting to mention that the story of the game is based on the studio founder’s issues with congenital heart disease. Vice actually did a cool [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUT5SBZkVys) about it years ago.
looked cool, but didn’t enjoy the gameplay very much
That looks so nice! Hopefully one day I can achieve something like that lol
I couldn’t decide while playing Tunic which one I liked better.
HLD is one of the best pieces of art I have even had the enjoyment of playing
The gaming podcast “Old Gamers Almanac” had this game as one of their very early episodes. I had never seen any pics or videos of the game before right now – this is definitely not what I expected.
I would like to toss Deaths Gambit in the ring. Visuals, music and storyline are phenomenal. Also Matt Mercer voices Death.
Also if people didn’t know this game is getting a sequel next year on steam. Its called hyper light breaker
I see someone never played monkey island.
Yeah the game is decent, Combat is like fine wine but some of the other parts like the level design/puzzles are not very good and many areas have excessive color “bleeding” where areas blend into one another making different levels/platforms difficult to see. I assume it must be a nightmare for color blind people.
well shit, I think I have this one free from epic. Sounds like it’s worth installing then?
A W E S O M E
I still remember ING facing that road boss in the middle of a healthy edible session, and it was substantially scary
Is it good on switch?
Love that game!
