i’m so offended! White people should never be allowed to say the N-word. I won’t rest until George Carlin is canceled and no one goes to another one of his shows
if you can’t realize it’s satire then you’re part of the problem.
Today racists use word thug as a synonym. [The Racially Charged Meaning Behind The Word ‘Thug’](https://www.npr.org/2015/04/30/403362626/the-racially-charged-meaning-behind-the-word-thug)
Turning slur words into profanities you are not supposed to say does not make the world better place.
Carlin, the great one
There’s a lot of older people that hate and despise anything involving that word. But they have no idea how many white, Hispanic, and even Asian kids call each other that word like it’s nothing. After probably one more generation it’ll be just as widely used as dude or bro.
Something is seriously wrong when some are banned from using words. Banning people from using toilets, bus stops and swimming pools is wrong also. But a word ffs
ITT: A bunch of white people who are so disconnected from reality they think **they’re** the ones being harmed by the n-word because they can’t say it
Man, this would not go over well in todays world.
Ehhh maybe he didn’t get every point right Lmao but 99% is still good aim
This said in front of a crowd of White Folk
Yeah, hopefully a bunch of people don’t see this clip and understand it the wrong way. In fact, he said it’s all about context, and the context has changed in our current environment where white people shouldn’t be using that word. Black people don’t want us using that word and I understand.
What Carlin is saying is not carte blanche usage of that word because we shouldn’t be banning words. You better be black and goddamn sure it can’t be interpreted as racist (good luck with that).
I would suggest white people just stay away from the word. We’re in a different time from when this was filmed and there are very few reasons while a white person using it would work these days.
You cutoff the rest of the bit
Oh how I wish he were still alive to shit on cancel culture.
I love this comment section. Y’all are so entertaining!
Makes me think of Donald Glover’s stand-up where his bit is about having everyone start saying the n-word; especially the white people. “We will lose some of you”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCofEwQL_b0
When the word has only one use and was created to be a racial slur then the context doesn’t matter, it’s just hateful. That that word was reappropriated is irrelevant
Another example of what the world needs none of, an explanation from an old white man about things that have never impacted him.
Yep. Words are just tools. For comedians, their background would help give an advantage (or disadvantage) using certain tools successfully.
If you’re talented enough, you can pretty much get away with anything. But *very* few people are/were ever at that level. And also, a white comedian using the n-word on stage is high risk with questionable reward. Not really a good reason to try it.
I’m reminded of a similar bit from [Louis CK](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqwj–wGEgY). Regardless of your views on his personal life – the bit was solid and was pretty well praised. But in the larger context of his career 15 years ago – it was far from his best material. More just like a party trick, “watch me get away with this!”.
I’m a huge Carlin fan, he’s a master of language. A legend. But I still think he fumbles the landing in this one – even adjusting for 1996 sensibilities (holy shit, this was 25 years ago). He argues for context, but omits too much for the punchline. At least, that’s my opinion.
Anybody know what year this was
“they create a soft language to protect themselves from [unpleasant truths], and it gets worse with every generation”
-Prophetic Carlin
What’s this context you speak of?
– India Arie
Does the n word have any other meaning than a racial slur? Seems like it was born in racism
“It’s all about the context!”
*Edits half the bit out*
Repost, and a bad take.
You can’t be nuanced online. I hate to bring him up, but look at Rogan. That n-word mix as all out of context and a lot of people understood that.
But when you screen shot “N word” from a white commenter, that is it — game over.
It’s a problem of poor communication on social media. We always assume the worst and never look the other person in the eyes.
1990 – “Context matters”
2022 Twitter – “Context does NOT matter”
Oh hey the same deceptively edited bit used to justify being a shit person.
The title of this post is hysterical, given the context of the content
Carlin was a prophet.
Americans have a lot of trouble dealing with reality
Watch the mob try to cancel Carlin out of his grave.
I’m gonna say it…
Where is the rest of the video? Why cut it out when the whole point is about context?
Back when people had common sense, critical thinking skills, and a strong enough sense of self that they weren’t offended by everything and anything.
It doesn’t matter what Carlin said, it doesn’t matter what I say, if you say that in front of the wrong person you better get ready to start losing things.
