They can choose to spend what is their money however they want. Wouldn’t be worth losing a thumb to me.
Thumb is an important one to lose.
Rather have a thumb than a boat.
A group of people decided how much this person should be compensated for this. Either through a settlement or through a jury.
This person isn’t gonna get their thumb back.
Now remember, this is now over. It’s done. This money is supposed to not only replace the enjoyment of the thumb, but also future medical costs. Think prosthetics.
So if this person enjoys the boat, sure.

Work in insurance. Couldn’t tell you how many times we sent people a check to pay for XYZ medical bill. But then they turn around and bought a pick-up truck or something. And then shocked pikachu face when the hospital bills started coming in.
I was talking to my neighbor about his boat and he said the two best days of owning a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. I’ve never owned a boat I just thought it was funny.
Thumbs are huge and have a big bone in them, think of how strong that dog’s jaw was and how much that shit must have hurt, cause it doesn’t seem likely that the dog bit it off cleanly.

Its no small feat to bite off a thumb. I should point out (with my index finger) that would have been a rather harrowing ordeal that person went through.
They totally deserve a large settlement (unless they were trespassing at the time).
I got a settlement for losing my uterus. 50k, and I ended up with 18k after my lawyer plus my health insurance company took the rest. I knew my lawyer would take it, but I never knew Anthem would get their grubby hands in it.
