I have a friend who used one of these fancy Canadian stalls while camping. He dropped his favorite fishing knife down in the hole while doing his business, then proceeded to use his fishing pole to try to retrieve said knife for hours.

Necessary in Canada because water in unheated spaces freeze in the winter, so these “pit shitters” are in every park and rest stop. Also every cabin pretty much, because it is safer to have one of these than attract bears, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions,wolverines, racoons, and all other creatures that will be coming back to dine regularly on poop not buried at least a few feet down, scattered around cabins in the woods.

The nicest rest stop bathroom I have ever used was on Highway 1 in BC. Hand stacked rock structure open to the front and looking on a beautiful Mountain View.
