It was actually quite good in the VR headsets of the day. I tried it using the Forte VFX1 back in the day and you got real stereoscopic 3D, just at a terribly low resolution per eye. Still, it was playable, especially with a full Thrustmaster joystick setup
The way they presented the coordinate system, that it was relative to you while you navigated a maze that was in a fixed coordinate system was glorious. It really added a dimension to that game.
*I typed dimension and thought “I should use another word there” then I thought “no I shouldn’t”*
This was when I figured out I would never cut it in multiplayer games, I was like “haha robot go brrrr” and everyone else was like “if you go forward, up, and strafe at the same time, the velocity vectors are additive, so you can scream around the map at 1.4x speed….”
Descent was an absolutely amazing game and a staple of my childhood.
Descent Freespace which came a few years later and wasn’t really related to the other games at all, was also amazing. Freespace had a great (for the time) story, the visuals were amazing (watching capital ships explode in brilliant fireworks never got old).
People gotta understand, the contemporaries to descent in 1995 were Command & Conquer 1, Warcraft II. Flying a spaceship in full 3 dimension graphics was mind-blowing. And it had full LAN multi-player! I was playing a 3D space multiplayer shooter in 1995.
My parents felt Doom was to violent for me being 6 years old in 1995. They got me this game with a joystick. I even had a little toy space helmet I would wear while playing this game. I went from playing Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo to playing this. I can’t even begin discrible how blown away by this game I was. I’ve been gamer ever since.
Wow! Thank you! I’ve been trying to remember what this game was for YEEAAAAARRRRSSSS!!!
haven’t seen it since the 90s. i kept thinking it was called Epic or something.
The best thing about this game was There Is No Up! The enemies were amazing with different personalities. Great game!
I remember how difficult it was to play without a joystick. Having to use the full number pad for all of your rotations and moving around.
`GABBAGABBAHEY`
Descent, Rise of the Triad, Heretic and Doom II…I played all of these games multiplayer over early dial up connections and through LAN.
It felt like we were in a golden age of gaming.

There’s a modern take on Descent called Overload.
the power of VooDoo compels you
Rockin soundtrack too.

This game gave me a proper understanding of 6DOF before I even knew what that was.
Like people have said above, what’s up? 😀
Oh man this game gave me some massive headaches and motion sickness. Good times!
JBOMB checking in. Best game ever made. D3 anyway. 😉
There is a [successor](https://store.steampowered.com/app/448850/Overload/)…

Would you say Descent was Decent?
I love this game. I actually still have it.
That game and also playing as alien in Aliens Vs. Predator was testing my spatial awareness like nothing else before or after.

Damn now I want to replay Freespace.

The Nintendo64 had a sequel, or port, called Forsaken.
Was amazing to play with three friends on a split screen.
I tried playing this game as a kid and would always die horribly on the early levels.
The music in the game was so fun too
*Self-destruct sequence activated!*
This came with my 486 Dx4/100 Acer Acros back in 94. It made me dizzy, but loved it. Win 3.1!
