Interesting shot of the fight location. Film archive from the era exists online, showing the lead-up and fight itself, which took place July 4, 1923. Dempsey was the top champion of the era, and was known for knocking out challengers quickly. One of Dempsey’s training/sparring partners broke several ribs prior to the match and could not compete in the program undercard.
The town of Shelby lost money (including four banks going bankrupt) as they expected large crowds paying for tickets to the Championship Fight. Attendees came from throughout the region to attend. Two rodeo matches were also booked, and a larger arena was built to house the events. However, only 1/3 of the estimated 20,000 were paid attendees; most did not purchase tickets, and investors ultimately lost money.
I lived in Shelby some years back and I liked it!
