This episode gloriously violates a time-honored tradition of all storytelling in that even the most tragic of endings has at least some small silver lining of hope for the viewer/reader. Even the worst horror film usually offers a glimmer of something positive resulting from all the tragedy. But this striking TZ episode rips your heart out at the very end – and leaves you there. The first time I saw it as a kid I thought it was a “to be continued” episode because no way could *that be the end. And yet it was the end. Stunning. Serling cared about telling the story and didn’t care about your feelings, such a powerful method and artistic commitment.
In a series filled with many great, iconic episodes, this is one of the truly standout episodes. “Time Enough At Last” from November, 1959, brought together strong writing, top acting, and the ending that is still memorable today. Burgess Meredith, as Bemis, is heartbreaking in the final minutes of the episode.
