This is really cool. I can never listen to the Day the Music Died without getting chills.
That’s Waylon Jennings on the left.
I just read his wiki page this AM, I didn’t realize he was only 22 when he died.
I can’t remember if I cried when I heard about his widowed bride…
It’s such a sad story. Buddy proposed to Maria on their first date and she married him two months later. Less than six months after the wedding, Buddy died in the plane crash. Maria was pregnant and it caused a miscarriage. She lost the baby and was hospitalized, causing her to miss Buddy’s funeral.
I’ve been to Clear Lake for work. The guy I had to meet up with told me about this concert maybe four times. He was very proud of this fact.
I’ve wondered many times over my life the kind of impact Buddy Holly would have had on music had he survived. He died so young and had so much more good music left to make. He was already a huge influence on so many other musicians and I’m sure he would have an even bigger influence had he lived longer. For all we know modern music might be somewhat different. The same goes for Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.

The Winter Dance Party tour.
What’s with these homies dissing my girl?
So incredibly sad 🙁
My aunt was married to Ritchie Valens’ brother Bob. She is played by Elizabeth Pena in La Bamba. Can’t imagine how things would have been if these guys would have not been on that plane.
Just like George asked about those in country: “Who’s gonna fill their shoes?” No one. We can only love and respect the work of those that took inspiration from them, which would be an awful lot.
Times are so different. He had racked up a nice string of Top 20 hits (and a #1) and it looks like hes playing a hotel ballroom.
He would have been in an arena at this point in his career in todays world
Ooh-wee-hoo, I look just like Rivers Cuomo
RIP Boys!
The plane was *supposed* to land at Hector Airport in Fargo for a concert across the river in Moorhead.
As someone who lives in Fargo and is currently right down the road from said airport… we’re sorry everybody :/
The day, the music died.
Waylon’s hometown and mine are the same: Littlefield, Texas. He came here to do shows a few times before he died. It’s about 40 miles from Lubbock, Buddy’s hometown. I have visited Buddy’s grave a couple of times. Two true legends.
Clyde played electric bass. Played it with finesse and grace.
Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry were the real rock and rollers of the 1950’s, their influence was HUGE.
Another thing Iowa ruined lol
Surf Ballroom. Still a cool spot. Just missed the Avett Brothers there a couple years ago
My dad was with that show. He sold the programs and novelties. They tried to get him on the plane. He had to drive so he could get his products to the next show. This was one of at least 2 times he didn’t fly for one reason or another with people who asked him to, and the plane crashed. He liked Holly and everyone but always spoke highly of Valence. Said he was just a genuinely sweet and talented kid.
Waylon fucking Jennings in the house
Imagine all the incredible music we never heard because of this tragedy
He didn’t want to play on this tour.
“Buddy where you at”
“Yo I’m at the new Krib!”
RITCHIE!!!!!!
I do love this man
Richie!!!!!!!
Sad
Remember going to the movie as a kid.
The Day the Music Died.
It’s wild to me how someone that ‘big’ radio-wise or popular or whatever would still be playing what looks to be such a small venue.
I love seeing good photos of early Stratocasters! So cool to think about how timeless that design became.
Uh pretty sure Weezer wasn’t around back then
anyone notice he looks just like rivers cuomo?
Something’s going wrong with this performance. Waylon and the drummer are looking at guitarist for a cue as to what to do. Waylon isn’t playing but is fiddling with the volume and tone knobs. Buddy looks walleyed, strumming a rote chord. Could be as simple as someone being out of tune. Or as complicated as Buddy forgetting which song he’s supposed to be playing, improvising, slowing down, speeding up without warning the band.
Somebody was watching La Bamba last night too
