The Reddit outrage cycle: internet people get mad that developers work their programmers too hard -> developers ease up on their programmers and the game takes longer to make -> internet people get upset the game is delayed -> developers work their programmers harder to meet audience expectations -> repeat.
Let’s call it precisely what it is: Bethesda’s marketing department REALLY wanted to nail down the 11/11/22 date because it looks oh so cool on promotional items and it happens to be exactly 11 years after the even cooler release date of their other big game release date for Skyrim, but development needed more time. It almost matched up, but nah.
2023, Starfield is suddenly released, no prior announcement, no review copies were distributed, the gaming community is completely taken by surprise.
You start the game, spend 4.1 hours building your character, spending less time than normal so you can get into the game. Opening cut-scene begins in the middle of an action packed battle above an unknown planet, fighter craft make mind-blowing maneuvers only possible in zero-g, epic flagships unleash terrifying barrages, unmanned droid-craft zip in straight lines narrowly avoiding collision with craft and projectiles to deliver ammo and rescue pilots that haven’t been blasted to atoms or hopeless set adrift far from the battle. Snap to your ship, a small but deadly fighter craft. You blast the enemy with rail-gun-like weaponry, using the sudden shift in momentum to dodge enemy fire and reposition for another shot in the same maneuver. Unexpectedly, a droid-craft taps a small piece of debris, knocking it off course and spirals into your ship dealing massive damage. Alarms blare and sparks fly as you desperately try to contain the resulting fire, but nothing is responding. A lurch, the sound of an explosion cut short, and darkness.
It’s funny how everyone thought Microsoft was gonna crush Sony because this cycle because they spent billions of dollars buying two massive studio known for delaying releases for years and (in Bethesdas case) regularly releasing buggy titles that run on an ps3 era game engine. How’s that working out for them?
they literally have nothing to show so far. I am betting on it still at early unfinished buggy stage like cyberpunk at release. it will still be that at release next year
On the bright side since I’m mainly PlayStation I don’t have to care or wait around for the games anymore due to the exclusivity. They had one less target platform to work on and they stilled missing the 2022 window. Ah good old Bethesda.
Microsoft said it worked but it didnt
Guys cut them some slack. They are working on 16x the detail.
gamers: making fun of companies delaying their games
also gamers: complaining because games are shipped unfinished
# NOT SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE!
I didn’t even think this was going to come out this year

So this means TES: 6 will not be released until 2032. You think I’m joking, but just wait.
Oh no, who didn’t see this coming?
Can’t wait for elder scrolls 6 in 2039

Edit: Math.
Been in development longer than Star Citizen

I was debating buying a Xs for this game. Well at least this saves me money for another year

This is why MS needs to stop announcing games so early. They created hype they can’t live up to.
Just keep the game under wrapped until is actually in a playable state then show it off.
it was a promotional tactic, and it’s working on all of you lol
“We’re confident in the date. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be announcing it.” – Todd Howard

Todd Howard approves this message
They need SHIXTEEN TIMES TEH DETAIL
I’m pretty disappointed but if it means we get a better game after the delay then I’m all for it.
I just hope this isn’t another Cyberpunk. Delay and it’s still a mess.
Is anyone surprised?
That’s a good reason enough for me.
