Australian soldiers after their release from Japanese captivity in Singapore, 1945. These five POWs were held in the Changi POW camp. Over 22,000 Australians became prisoners of war of the Japanese.
The newspaper the soldier is reading is the “Daily Express” from September 5th, 1945. The headline reads “30th Day in Hiroshima: Those Who Escaped Begin To Die, Victims Of – The Atomic Plague”.
Colorized by Christos Kaplanis
They look like they never missed a beat.
fuck and I thought I was underweight
They need a pie
Those with strong stomachs should read about Japan’s Unit 731 from WW2. Emphasis on strong.
now japan has us all as pows .
From what I’ve read regarding Japan and their opinions on surrender and POW’s in WW2, I’d consider them pretty lucky to be alive.
My mom told me that the principal of her high school was a captured by the Japanese during the war. I wonder what he experienced during his time of captivity.
What does recovery look like?
Odd how socially acceptable it has become to colorize historic bw photos.
Canadian soldiers in Hong Kong looked about the same after their release from the Japanese.

I am surprised by how relaxed and cheerful their poses are
Thank God they survived!
How to lose weight by doing this one simple trick…
Gods, I hope these guys fed up slowly, many that emaciated apparently died after rescue from eating too much/too fast (refeeding syndrome)
There is so much I don’t know about ww2
In my opinion, the Japanese Empire was just as bad as – if not worse than- Nazi Germany. At the end of the day, both were evils that should be unconscionable, but were very real.
I read Australia and i thought this was the covid camps releasing the unvaxxed after 15 days
The guy on the right, is that a tattoo on his chest?
Ah for fucks sake, they look so incredible malnourished. Makes me want to force feed them a steak or something.
War is rough.
Getting some serious Joe Ingles vibes from the top left guy.
Djokovic after no breakfast in australia
Bros were on a diet
They are now immune to hunger
Growing up in Australia in the 70’s and 80’s I knew plenty of older men who still hated the Japanese.
Yeah. The stuff the Japanese did in the Pacific almost makes what the Nazis did pale by comparison. And yet we rarely hear about it.
Talk to any Asian person (especially an older one) actually from one of the countries invaded by Japan about how they generally feel about the Japanese and prepare to get an earful.
It’s things like this that make me stare when people blithely run down the US. Don’t get me wrong – the US is VERY FAR from perfect but there’s just no real comparison with the atrocities that have been committed by some others.
Not very kawaii
I want Christian Bale to star in an Eddie Murphy/Klumps type of role(s) but it’s 100% Oscar bait.
Imagine being so thin that you can’t eat too much for fear you could die.
Jesus, that’s fucking sick!
Heroes, every one.
My grandpa was in this prison.
Sweet Jesus. They are literally skin and bones.
“Food?” “maybe later, but can I have a cup of tea”
They physically look awful, so I can only imagine the subsequent PTSD (shell-shock), which was more than likely just swept under the carpet back in the day.
The juxaposition of calmly crossing one’s legs, reading the paper whilst having a cuppa and punching a dart, whilst literally resembling a skeleton is stark AF.
The lucky ones… 🙁
Look more healthy than the Japanese did in those days
Here’s the archive for the paper he’s reading:

Unfortunately it’s behind a paywall, but front page story is “The Atomic Plague” i guess at the time radiation wasn’t common knowledge, they’re talking about it like it’s poison gas
The problem is we have almost no one left from that generation and now we are about to repeat the same mistakes in the name of whatever is the flavour of the global power imbalance.
There are no permanent enemies or friends. Only permanent interests perpetuated by those who are protected from the physical dangers of a full out war.
