Abortion Ruling: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

  • If Roe v Wade is overturned, people should actively resist the new bans. Abortion clinics should continue going about business as usual. If police get involved, organize a human shield around the clinics. Democrats cannot be the pansy party anymore.

  • I’m not an American. I support women’s right to choose and have reasonable access to abortion clinics everywhere.

The conservative perception is strange to me. To save the sperm and eggs of liberals they are willing to make a woman go through:

    – The physical and mental discomfort of pregnancy.

    – The frustration of being forced to do a huge life-changing thing against your will.

    – The physical tearing during childbirth.

    – The risk of death during childbirth.

    – The risk of experiencing postpartum depression that can last for years. A type of depression that can turn a woman into a shadow of her previous self.

    – Increased poverty and government spending.

And after all that when the sperm and eggs become people who vote for the Democratic Party the conservatives feel “Damn, I wish those people weren’t born”.

    WTF?

  • This video has been great to watch. I normally love r/PoliticalHumor as it’s one of my favorite subs, however the past week it was flooded with Dem establishment apologists and every comment along the lines of “Dems should have taken this threat more seriously and implemented what they ran on” was downvoted to hell. It’s refreshing hearing someone as articulate and with such a big microphone say it so well.

  • I’m not sure John or his producers realize how easily legislation can be repealed. A law legalizing abortion would have been unlikely to have survived unified Republican control. I’m also skeptical something like that would ever have passed.

This feels like a good example of John taking a righteous position without a realistic understanding of the challenges of implementing that position. No way could President Obama have passed a law legalizing abortion AND passed the ACA.
